Jr. High Sports Information

The Halifax Regional School Board has created a position to oversee the administration of inter-scholastic sport for junior high, middle schools and high schools with Grade 9 (Mariner Zone).

So far three sports for Junior High are in the organizational stage. They are Cross-Country Running, Soccer (Boys and Girls) and Flag Football (Boys and Girls.) Next to be organized is volleyball and basketball.

We have a teacher coach for Cross-Country. We have parent coaches for Girls’ soccer and Boys’  flag Football. We need coaches for Boys’ Soccer and Girls’ Flag Football.  If interested in coaching the following criteria need to be met:

  • completed Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry;
  • has reached the age of 21;
  • has provided two references;
  • has previous experience working with youth;
  • will adhere to HRSB/ school policies and guidelines;
  • will adhere to the Physical Education Safety Guidelines (EECD 2015) and/ or the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation (NSSAF) guidelines (where applicable);
  • will respect confidentiality as the norm.

At Rocky Lake Junior High this year we are also offering lunch hour sport leagues. We are starting off the year with our in house soccer lunch hour league. Sign-up sheets for this league are now posted on the physical education bulletin board.  Closing date for sign up is Friday Sept. 22. The league will begin the following week.

Martock Ski Snow-boarding club forms will be first available on curriculum night Sept. 28.

Art Club

There will be a grade 7 art club each Wednesday in room 325.  Bring your lunch.

Science Opportunity

Are you interested in a career in Science, Engineering, Math or Technology? On September 20th from 6:30pm to 7:30pm you can meet people working in these fields.  Junior high school students, parents, and teachers are welcome to attend.  The event will be held at the Halifax Central Library.

Registration forms will go home this week for parents to check that all information is correct.  All forms need to be returned even if the information is all correct.  They must be signed and returned to the school.  Please make sure to check that the address is correct as this is how bussing is determined.  Also please make sure phone numbers and email addresses are current and correct.

The location of the band room #101, makes it easy to deposit instruments in the band room in the morning, where they may be safely left for the school day and picked up on the way out of dismissal. Instruments should only be left at the school overnight if the student has band again the following day.

Morning band practice – Tuesday Grade 7, Wednesday Grade 8, Thursday Grade 9.  Arrive by 7:30am ready for a 7:35 am rehearsal.

This year Sr. Jazz band will practice on Monday from 2:50pm-3:55pm. An information letter will be sent home with interested students. The Jr. Jazz band will meet on Thursdays at lunch.

Band payments are due no later than October 18, 2017
